9ENG: Writing tips

1. RESPONDING TO A TOPIC
In any writing assignment, you must address the topic or question. Ensure you clearly refer back to the topic and its key words in your response. In particular, do this in your topic and concluding sentences -- that is what they are there for! For example:
In comparing Romeo's two loves, we see a clear distinction: one is characterised by frustration, the other by fulfilment.

Mercutio and Romeo have two starkly different perspectives on love, as seen in the way they speak.

There is a clear connection between the Friar's advice to Romeo about movement and his advice about love.
In your body sentences, try to express each idea once and express it well. This has the BONUS side-effect of ensuring that you do not repeat yourself!

2. PARAGRAPHS
Remember that a paragraph is a single block of text with no line breaks of any sort. If you are writing using multiple paragraphs,
there are two ways to format them:
  1. Separate each paragraph with a line break (leave a full blank line in between them).
  2. Indent the first line of each paragraph (use the TAB key if you are word processing) and do not use any line breaks.
>>> If you need to recap on paragraph structure, refer to this post or see the hand graphic above. Remember to aim for 5-7 sentences.

3. SQUAWK
I often give explanations in class that will help you with assignments. However, make sure you do not simply parrot what I've said. You must provide your own examples and discussion of the text to demonstrate your understanding.
