1. Sadie Jackson and Kevin McCoy meet again for the first time in three years.
2. We meet the Jackson family. Linda Mullet tells Sadie's parents about Sadie's meeting with Kevin. We see the tension between Tommy Jackson and Linda, who are going out.
3. We meet the McCoy family. Kevin's young brother Gerald throws stones at soldiers in the street while Brede tries to keep the peace.
4. Sadie and Kevin meet again and walk to Cave Hill.
5. Mrs Mullet gossips. Tommy won't join the Orange Lodge. Sadie returns home and her parents are angry with her.
6. Kevin returns home and goes scrapping the next day with Mr Kelly. Brian Rafferty shows Kevin the rifle he has acquired and the two fight.
7. A day later, Kevin and Sadie go to Bangor and visit the beach and fair. They argue about religion but then make up.

10. Brede tries to contact Sadie through work but Sadie has been sacked. Brede tells Sadie about the attack on Kevin and asks Sadie to break contact with him.
11. Kevin, losing consciousness, waits for Sadie. Mr Blake helps him, Sadie arrives, and the three go to Mr Blake's home. Sadie tells Kevin she won’t see him again.
12. Mr Blake tells Sadie and Kevin that they can continue to meet safely at his place. We learn that Sadie was sacked for seeing a Catholic. Mrs McConkey's shop is bombed and Mrs McConkey is killed. The Mullets continue their interfering.
13. Mr Blake asks Sadie to work for him. Sadie meets Moira Henderson, a young Catholic woman who is married to a Protestant. We see Sadie's prejudice against Catholics. We see that the barricades of Belfast are not quite as intrusive in the suburbs. The next day, Sadie starts babysitting for the Hendersons. Kevin and Sadie agree they must keep their relationship with Mr Blake completely secret.
14. Kevin is off work for three weeks and visits Sadie at Mr Blake's. Mrs McCoy gives birth to her ninth child. Kate Kelly confronts Kevin about their relationship and leaves in tears. Sadie is confronted by Steve, Linda Mullet's new boyfriend. Looking across the barbed wire, she feels that Kevin is unreachable. Soldiers search the McCoys' street.
15. Brian Rafferty's gun is found in Mr Kelly’s scrapyard -- Kate Kelly has told the police that it belongs to Kevin. Kevin is questioned by the army.
